World of Goo – A Review Powered by Goo

How is it that Goo can contain more charisma, charm, cuteness and lets not forget gooeyness than pretty much any other video game character ever? I will tell you why, it is because the two men who created World of Goo are masters of their craft. From all accounts Ron Carmel and Kyle Gabler have spent their time sitting in a giant pool of goo becoming so intimately attached to it that they could create the perfect Goo ball.

The ever amazing 2D Boy have confirmed that World of Goo has gone gold. The retail version will hit the US around the first week of November, the DRM free version will be available on the website a bit sooner than that.

World of Goo Trailer Update

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Just been in touch with Ron Carmel from 2D Boy regarding the latest World of Goo trailer and he had some interesting tid-bits to pass along.

The trailers were all taken from the PC version, and that is exactly how it will look on the Wii too
Development should be finished around July but release depends on Nintendo’s schedule.

Ron also had this to say regarding the big ‘Mrs Goo Balls’ from the new trailer.

One new kind of ball you saw in the video is the Beauty Ball. That’s the huge pink one. Beauty balls get processed into Beauty Product ™ which can get sucked out through the pipe. Thus, some of the levels in chapter 2 are solved in two “stages”… first you process the beauty ball, then you suck out the beauty product. Rumor has it that the World of Goo Corporation uses raw Beauty Product ™ to make facial exfoliating lotions and personal lubricants.

All very intriguing, two “stages” to a level, beauty balls, Beauty Product ™…wow this is all so great!

Remember to keep your eyes peeled on 2D Boy for all the latest regarding World of Goo!

Pipes Pipes Pipes

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Empire Interactive have confirmed that ‘Pipe Mania Puzzle Madness’ will be coming out later this year accross many platforms, including the humble PC!

A remake of the classic Pipe Mania (Pipe Dream to me) this new version of the classic game will feature expanded game modes along with new themes, game mechanics and new blocks for the goo to travel through!

“We are very excited to be bringing back Pipe Mania. Releasing this popular puzzle title across all formats will give all gamers of all ages the opportunity to enjoy this exciting puzzle sensation,” commented Ian Higgins, CEO Empire Interactive.

From the press release

The basic premise of the game is to get the goo (oh I love my goo tonight!) from point A to B by using different shaped blocks to ensure it stays on track! Bioshock copied this effectively in its hacking mini-game.

There are some screenshots over on Shacknews with the revelation of five new game modes and over 70 levels as well as some multiplayer action.

New World of Goo Trailers

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Two new videos for the amazing looking World of Goo have been released from 2D Boy’s day at a Nintendo WiiWare Festival. If these don’t get you excited for this game I don’t know what will, because you must be a very sad person not to fall in love with this game!

While the first movie is good, the second one below the jump is even better! As these were taken from the WiiWare Festival I assume they are of the Wii version, hopefully I can get some confirmation on that soon.

World of Goo – Preview

I now officially love goo and that is all thanks to World of Goo which I have had the pleasure of playing, it may only be Chapter 1 of the game I have been able to play so far, but some early impressions are in order.

This indie game, currently nominated for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the Independent Games Festival has been made by two ex-EA employees; Ron Carmel and Kyle Gabler and their studio 2D Boy. Based on this preview version of the game they have made a piece of magic. Who would have thought that goo and some nifty physics could be so fun? I did actually, after playing Tower of Goo, what I will call the precursor to World of Goo, all those months (…or is it years?)ago I knew that goo was the way forward.

World of Goo is taking the mechanics of Tower of Goo and putting them into something much, much bigger, better and goo-ier. Your goal is simple, build a structure out of the extremely cute looking goo people (are they people? I don’t know!) to the exit pipe of the level to let the goo escape to freedom! It may be a pretty simple idea but it is executed with such great craft that I can’t wait for the full game to experience it all.

Froggy!

World of Goo doesn’t just base itself on the simply delightful core levels, there is a meta-game thrown in for some damn fine fun! For every goo ball over the required number you save in the main game they get thrown here. This is your chance to build a tower up to the sky and get above the clouds of the other people who have played World of Goo and built a meta-game tower.

It is things like this, simple competition which make this game destined for (hopefully) greatness. While this may not end up being the most commercially successful game in the IGF finals (AudioSurf has my money on that, more on that another time)I think it has a great chance of winning, the innovation on sheer brilliance on hand is apparent from the off, monsieur’s Carmel and Gabler should be proud!

Mini-Tower

The full version will be out soon, and the sooner the better because I really need to see what further exciting goo balls there are and what extravagant levels have been devised for us! Look out for a full review when the full version has been played to death by yours truly! Check out they lads right here for more information on getting your hands on World of Goo.
